Geographical Location
Itu Aba Island is located at the northwest end of the northern
part of the Spratly Archipelago near the Cheng Ho Reefs (Tizard
Bank). It is situated on the eastern side of the western navigation
route through the South China Sea, giving it a very important location.
As an outpost of Taiwan, the island has a very advantageous location
for assisting with navigational safety, providing services to fishermen,
dealing with shipwrecks, providing help for maritime accidents,
monitoring the climate in the South China Sea, etc. Itu Aba Island
also has irreplaceable importance in terms of Southeast Asian and
other international air routes.
Natural Environment
Why has Itu Aba Island been considered a treasure trove for such
a long time? The island is large and has fresh water, and is also
close to the equator, so it is rarely affected by typhoons. The
soil is fertile, the plants grow tall and densely, and there are
plenty of aquatic products. If you observe Itu Aba Island from the
air, you can see that it is narrower in the south and north, and
stretches out to the east and west. The land is low and even. There
is no clear distinction between the four seasons because of the
tropical oceanic climate.
A Taiwan, ROC garrison is stationed on Itu Aba on a permanent
basis, making the building of roads and military installations an
important task. As a result, the island now has well-built roads,
and the soldiers keep it as clean as a well-kept park. However,
the construction work has caused harm to the ecological balance
on the island. For example, many trees were chopped down to build
roads and military installations, causing considerable destruction
to the island's tree cover.
