Swallow Reef was developed as a resort by Malaysia

A Brief Introduction to Swallow Reef
Swallow Reef is a small reef in the Spratly Islands, and is currently operated and managed by the government of Malaysia. The tourist center is being aggressively developed here, and it has become the first islet in the South China Sea to be opened to the public. So what is so special about Swallow Reef? Let's take a look!
Geographical Location

Swallow Reef has an important geographical location. It is situated in the southeast of the Spratly Islands, very close to the capital of Sabah, East Malaysia. The Japanese established a temporary base on the islet in World War II; the reef is now both an important military base and a marine attraction.
Natural Environment

Swallow Reef is the only reef in Swallow Atoll, which is exposed to the sea. The island is long and narrow, stretching from the northeast to the southwest. It is small in area, around 0.1 square kilometers. The amazing fact about Swallow Reef is that this tiny, exposed islet was practically man-made! It was built by the Malaysian government, which collected sand and connected two isolated reefs by filling the channel between them. So the Swallow Reef, which we see now is actually an artificial islet constructed by man.
