The Philippines delimited most of the central coral reef area of the Spratly Islands as their territory, and declared that they have sovereignty over the islands, which they call the "Kalayaan Group." In fact, there are only eight islands under Philippine control. Filipinos fish in the area, and search for petroleum and gas. The Philippines set up their military command post on Thitu Island. There is a short runway, docks and other facilities on the island. It has been reported that the Philippines have opened the eastern area of the South China Sea under their control to marine sightseeing.
